Does iPhone 15 Need Wireless Charging?

Does iPhone 15 Need Wireless Charging?

With the release of the iPhone 15 series, Apple has taken another step towards Wireless, with the iPhone 15 series becoming the first models to support the Qi2 wireless charging protocol. Simply put, it means that in the future, users will be able to provide 15W wireless charging for iPhone by using a wireless charger that supports the Qi2 standard. Before this, the iPhone only 7.5W Qi wireless output power, want to achieve 15W wireless charging power, you need to use the Apple MFM (Made For MagSafe) certified wireless charger.

Why you need a wireless charging dock?

Think back to how you charge your cell phone every time: one hand holds the phone, the other hand picks up the data cable, eyes on whether or not there is alignment of the charging port, with a little force, plugged into the line to start charging, and finally put down the phone.

If you use a wireless charging dock, each time you charge, the steps become: eyes to determine the location of the charging dock, put the phone on it (you only use one hand), start charging.

When you want to take away the phone, the situation is very similar, plugged into the cord to charge the phone, you still need to use two hands to unplug the cable, while wireless charging, you only need to pick up as you go.

The current wireless charging, while it doesn't yet give you the freedom to be completely wireless without any restrictions like Bluetooth headphones, it makes the matter of charging your cell phone a lot easier:

  • You only need one hand for the act of charging your phone;
  • You don't have to point it at the charging port anymore, just casually place it on a coaster-sized plate and charge your phone;
  • You won't have to take away and put back your phone so often that you forget to re-plug it in to continue charging.

These benefits will not be too obvious until you use wireless charging, but once you do, it will make you exclaim, "It works!”.

How does wireless charging work?

Wireless charging technology, originated from wireless energy transmission technology, can be divided into small power wireless charging and high power wireless charging two ways.

Low-power wireless charging often uses electromagnetic induction, such as cell phone charging Qi method. High-power wireless charging is often resonant (most electric vehicle charging uses this method), with the power supply (the charger) transmitting energy to the power-using device, which uses the energy it receives to recharge the battery and to operate itself at the same time.

Since the charger and the power-using device use a magnetic field to transmit energy, there are no wires connecting the two, so both the charger and the power-using device can be made without exposed conductive contacts.

How does wireless charging work

There are five mainstream wireless charging standards:

  1. the Qi standard
  2. the Power Matters Alliance (PMA) standard
  3. the Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) standard
  4. iNPOFi technology
  5. Wi-Po technology

The current iPhone supports the Qi standard.

Qi is the world's first to promote wireless charging technology standardization organization - Wireless Power Consortium (Wireless Power Consortium, referred to as WPC) launched the "wireless charging" standard, with two major characteristics of convenience and universality. First, different brands of products, as long as there is a Qi logo, can be charged with Qi wireless charger. Second, it overcame the wireless charging "universality" of the technical bottleneck, in the near future, cell phones, cameras, computers and other products can be charged with Qi wireless charger, wireless charging for the possibility of large-scale applications.

The mainstream wireless charging technology in the market is mainly through three ways, namely electromagnetic induction, radio waves, and resonance, and Qi uses the most mainstream electromagnetic induction technology.
